Why test and tag
What test and tag is, and why it matters for your workplace.
Test and tag is a practical way of checking portable electrical equipment and clearly showing that it has been inspected. For many businesses, it forms part of a sensible approach to workplace electrical safety.
What is test and tag?
Test and tag usually refers to the inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment, followed by placing a tag on the item to show it has been checked. In Australia, this is commonly discussed in line with AS/NZS 3760:2022.
Why does it matter?
Portable equipment can wear over time. Leads can become damaged, plugs can loosen and items that appear fine at a glance may still need attention.
Regular inspection and testing helps identify unsafe equipment, supports workplace safety and gives businesses a practical way to keep equipment checks clear and organised over time as part of a broader workplace health and safety approach.
What equipment is usually included?
If it plugs in and is moved, handled or used regularly, it is often worth considering as part of your equipment checks.
This can include everyday workplace items such as power boards, extension leads, chargers, kitchen appliances, office equipment, salon tools and other portable devices used in normal business operations.
What happens during test and tag?
The process usually starts with a visual inspection of the item, looking for signs of damage, wear or anything that may affect safe use.
The equipment is then electrically tested where appropriate, and a tag is applied so it is clear that the item has been checked.
What happens when you book?
The process is usually straightforward. You send through a few details about your workplace and equipment, the job is scoped, and a booking can then be arranged. Tested equipment is clearly tagged so it is easy to identify what has been checked.
